Statement by Louie Haloulakos
President, Glendale Police Officers Association
Friday, July 2, 2010
After nearly a dozen meetings and a sincere effort to reach an agreement,
salary contract discussions between our association and the City of Glendale
have stalled.
Our members started these negotiations with the understanding that the
City's representatives were asking for concessions from all employees. At
the outset, it was announced that the City needed concessions from the ranks
of city workers.
Throughout these negotiations, we have been committed to sharing in the
overall sacrifice to make sure the City could properly manage its current
and out-year financial commitments.
Our team's most recent proposal included concessions that would have saved
the City $4 million over the term of the contract. Our proposal secured
that savings for the City, in large part, by giving back raises and
increasing our pension contributions.
While we represent less than 15% of the City's workforce, our proposed
contract would have provided more than 60% of the funds that City officials
said were necessary to close their budget gap.
Our proposal was rejected.
We can only guess that the City's reasons for rejecting our proposal involve
issues other than the immediate and out-year budget concerns. Nevertheless,
our position has not changed; if the City has a budget gap, we remain ready
to help.
At this juncture, we have informed our members that the City rejected our
cost-savings proposal, and that no more meetings between the parties have
been scheduled.
GPOA members remain dedicated to quality public safety services for the
residents and businesses of the City of Glendale.
The Glendale Police Officers Association represents the collective bargaining
interests of more than 240 police officers and sergeants working in the City
